Dr. Deanne Soares is a skilled urological surgeon specialising in robotic cancer and non-cancer procedures. She prides herself on a patient-centric approach to healthcare. Understanding the anxiety that comes with seeing a surgeon, she is committed to ensuring each patient's experience is as comfortable and informative as possible. Her approach revolves around understanding her patients and their priorities, ensuring their needs are always at the heart of her recommendations.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERTISE

Dr. Soares commenced her academic journey with undergraduate degrees in Science and Education from The University of Melbourne and La Trobe University. She then secured her postgraduate qualification in Medicine from the University of Notre Dame (Sydney and Melbourne)

During her early years as a doctor, she earned two Masters’ degrees, one in Surgery and another in Health Leadership and Management. Dr. Soares then proceeded to her formal urology training in Victoria, where she became proficient in endourology, general urology, laparoscopic and open urological surgery with a particular focus on minimally invasive techniques.

Beyond her foundational training in Urological surgery, she has gained additional proficiency with further subspecialty training in Robotic Urological Surgery- Prostate, Kidney and Bladder Surgery at Stepping Hill Hospital, England.

Dr Soares specialises in the following robotic and laparoscopic procedures:

  • Robotic Radical Prostatectomy, for the removal of prostate cancer with a focus on preservation of erectile function

  • Robotic radical cystectomy, for the removal of bladder cancer with urinary tract diversion

  • Robotic Partial and Total Nephrectomy, for the removal of kidney cancer

  • Robotic Nephroureterectomy, for the removal of upper urinary tract cancer

  • Robotic Pyeloplasty and Ureteric Re-implantation, for ureteric strictures

Moreover, she performs general urological procedures, such as TURP, Urolift, laser lithotripsy, and general urological and peno-scrotal surgery.

LEADERSHIP AND MENTORSHIP

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Soares is a strong advocate for teaching, mentoring, and leadership. She is a current member of the USANZ Diversity and Inclusion Committee and part of the RACS Women in Surgery Group.

She has previously held multiple leadership roles, including Chair of the Urology Trainee Forum, Director of Communications at RACSTA (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Trainee Association), Victorian and National Representative of the Australian and New Zealand Trainees and been part of the RACS Board of Urology

She is also a mentor to many aspiring urology trainees

Her dedication to research was recognised when she was awarded the Keith Kirkland Prize in 2020.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Outside her professional life, Dr. Soares is an eager traveller, a food enthusiast, an avid reader, and enjoys spending quality time with her partner Duncan and their two dogs, Chico and Kulfi.
