DR LIAM KAVANAGH

Dr Liam Kavanagh is an Australian-trained consultant Urologist fully credentialed urological surgeon with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is a general urologic surgeon with excellent experience in pelvic robotic surgery.

Dr Liam is passionate about understanding his patients and aiming to reach the best health outcomes.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERTISE

Growing up locally in Essendon, Dr Liam initially completed a pharmacy degree followed by a Medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He worked as a junior doctor at Austin and Northern health, then underwent his formal urological training in Victoria.

Dr Liam has extensive experience in robotic, laparoscopic surgery and endourology. He has obtained extra experience in addition to basic Urological surgery, including:

  • Robotic pelvic urology Fellowship – Royal Surrey County Hospital, in Guildford, England.

  • Extra training certified by the EAU and Royal College of Surgeons (UK).

  • Dr Liam specialises in the following robotic and laparoscopic surgeries:

    • Robotic prostatectomy– removing prostate cancer, aiming for complete nerve preservation.

    • Robotic radical cystectomy with urinary tract diversion for bladder cancer.

He also performs the following procedures:

  • TURP (transurethral resection of prostate) and greenlight laser prostatectomy and urolift

  • Ureteric and kidney stone laser lithotripsy

  • General urologic peno-scrotal surgery, including vasectomy and circumcision.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS AND INTERESTS

Dr Liam has been published in the urologic literature and has presented his research at the Australia and New Zealand Annual Urology Symposium. He also completed a Masters of Surgery, in urologic genomics, through the University of Melbourne. He is a member of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ).

After his fellowship, he was lucky enough to spend three months riding his motorbike around Italy, where he spent eight weeks in Italian language school, and continues to work on his lingua Italiana in Australia.

Outside of work, Dr Liam enjoys cooking, spending time with his family and friends and is happy to talk to any patient about any sport.
